PhD Net
The Lehrstuhl für Kriminologie, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Centre of Criminology (University of Cape Town) established a collaboration to develop a PhD Network as well as a series of digital courses on World Policing.
The PhD Network seminar exchange was coordinated by Professor Thomas Feltes of the Ruhr University with financial support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in cooperation with German Police University, Muenster University.
During 2009, as part of the seminar exchange, a group of five doctoral candidates from the Centre of Criminology visited Germany from 22 August until 5 September 2009. Professor Elrena van der Spuy from the University of Cape Town and Professor Monique Marks from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal led the group to Germany.
In January 2010, a group of five doctoral students plus supervisors, from Bochum University, Essen University and the Police-University of Muenster in Germany and three participants from Ghent University in Belgium, visited the Centre of Criminology, University of Cape Town from the 23rd January to the 4th February 2010 to participate in a seminar exchange on police methodology, theory and practice.

A second development in this collaboration was the production of a seminar series on World Policing for distribution to various tertiary institutions globally. The topics include Private Security in South Africa; Policing structures and challenges in Scotland, Germany, Europe, France, Spain; Switzerland; Finland; UK; Africa; Public order policing in Australia and plural police provision. Scholars from around the world presented seminars.
