Environmental Security Seminar Series

The 'New Environmental Governance (NEG)' Framework Workshop: The Centre of Criminology at the University of Cape Town, in collaboration with the Regulatory Institutions Network (RegNet) at the Australian National University, will be hosting a one-day workshop to explore the emerging 'New Environmental Governance (NEG)' framework on the 28th of July 2011 from 09:00-17:00 at the Palm House Hotel in Kenilworth, Cape Town. The workshop will raise and discuss new emerging developments in environmental governance, and include discussions of a forthcoming book entitled: 'New Environmental Governance' by Prof. Neil Gunningham, Dr Cameron Holley, and Prof. Clifford Shearing.

The Environmental Lab at the Centre of Criminology held five seminars during 2009 on topics relating to sustainable environments. The seminars provide a good arena for interactive debate and assist in developing an understanding of innovative requirements both nationally and globally that may encourage a pro-poor focused development agenda, especially for the Southern African region.

WILLIS Seminar "The World I'd Like to Live in Someday" held in collaboration with Project 90 by 2030 and the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainable Leadership on 5 November 2009. Speakers were Peter Willis and Clifford Shearing. Jessica Wilson was the Chairperson.

GLOBAL CRISIS AND THE NEW GREEN DEAL: OPPORTUNITY OR CHIMERA held on the 3rd September is the fourth seminar in the 2009 Environmental Security Seminar Series. Prof. Mark Swilling, Assoc. Prof. Ralph Hamann and Dr Russell Wise discussed the potential opportunities arising from the green new deal. Access the invitation here.

NEW CHALLENGES, NEW RESPONSES, NEW HUMANITY?: ARE WE DISCERNING THE EARLY OUTLINES OF HOW WE MIGHT BE IN THE FUTURE. Co-hosted with Project 90X2030. This is the third seminar of the 2009 Environmental Security Seminar Series. The key speaker was Mr. Peter Willis with Mr Joseph Edozien as respondent and Jessica Williams as facilitator.

MONT FLEUR WORKSHOP January 2009: The University of Bergen, the Centre of Criminology, University of Cape Town and ACCESS, held an agenda setting workshop on environmental/ecological security for the social science research team.
