Supporting and Sustaining Poor Environmental Economies Project

The New Economies Programme is funded by the Embassy of Finland and the South African NRF Chair Initiative in African Security and justice. The programme considers ways in which the knowledge and capacities of poor constituencies can be mobilized in responding to climate change. It brings together researchers from several institutions, in particular, the Centre of Criminology, The Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Sciences (ACCESS) and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR) affiliated with the University of Bergen as well as Shack Dwellers International (SDI) an organization that supports poor focused economic and service delivery initiatives in over 30 countries.

The Programme aims to explore the possibility of integrating effective mitigation and adaptation activities related to climate change with developmental benefits. Much has been, and is, being said about how the poor are, and are likely to, be the victims of impacts related to climate change. While this literature is growing, more research is required to understand how poor constituencies may contribute to mitigation and adaptation strategies and through this contribution contribute to their wellbeing. This initial two year programme will be comprised of a series of related projects that will address these twin objectives.
