Students Visiting From Abroad

Teresie Hommers from the Department of Administration and Organization Theory, University of Bergen is at present studying and working with the Centre from August 2011 to January 2013. Teresie is studying for a Masters degree and is undertaking empirical study in our Socio-Ecological Resilience project, doing joint research projects with our post grad students, researchers and partner organisations in order to gain comparative insights into environmental security in the Western Cape

Borgar Bohlin is involved in empirical study in our Sustainable Livelihoods Research food security research project as part of his Master’s Course at the University of Bergen and is visiting the Centre until January 2013. The research focus of his dissertation is to investigate conditions for local food security through comparative case studies within the Western Cape. His research in Cape Town will inform the empirical research focus of his dissertation which will enable him to investigate comparative conditions for environmental security in the Western Cape.

Alfred Muteru is visiting the Centre as a research fellow for 6 months until May and is working as a research assistant with Elrena on Policing and Security Sector Reform in Africa.

Muteru holds a BA in Communication and Media from the Egerton University, Kenya. Before joining the Fellowship Programme at Kings College he worked at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Nairobi. At ISS Muteru conducted research and supported policy formulation on addressing security issues in Eastern African countries. At KNHCR he was involved in assessing human rights violations in the Kenyan post-election violence in 2008 and extra-judicial killings that were linked to organised crime networks in Kenya.

As part of the African Leadership Centre, fellowship program, Muteru is currently studying on the MA in Conflict, Security and Development at King’s College London.

Concetta Lorizza

Concetta is completing her LLM at the University of Cape Town, in 2011. Her research relates to the issue of pre-trial detention. For the purpose of her research, Concetta will put the issue in a comparative and international perspective and then consider how pre-trial detention (with emphasis in police lock-ups) presents itself in Mozambique. Although pre-trial detention is an issue of international concern, the case study of Mozambique can generate insights to other jurisdictions in Southern Africa.

Laura Drivdal

Laura Drivdal is a student from Bergen in Norway. She joined us in September, 2009 from the University of Bergen and is a PhD candidate in the field of environmental security. Laura completed a Masters degree at the University of Bergen specializing in "Environmental Politics and Regulation, Political Theory and Governance". Laura has been awarded an International Development Research Centre grant for her study at the University of Cape Town.

Alex Mauldin

Alex Mauldin is a visiting student from the University of Kentucky . He is currently visiting on an internship programme. During his visit he is working together with Lindela and Kanyiswa from BEEP (Beyond Expectation Environmental Project) . The work he is doing at the centre primarily revolves around the background research for interactive workshops.

Kim Nicholas

Kim Nicholas is also a visiting student from the University of Kentucky . She is currently visiting on an internship programme. During his visit he is working together with Lindela and Kanyiswa from BEEP (Beyond Expectation Environmental Project) . Some of the activities she has been involved in have been field trips with learners to Table Mountain and facilitating interactive workshops with grade 5 learners.

Nikolaos Stamatakis

Nikolaos Stamatakis is a student from the Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy in Belgium. He is visiting the Centre, from March to August 2011, as part of his doctoral research looking into restorative justice developments in prisons. The title of his thesis is Restorative Justice Behind Bars: Exploring the Applicability of Restorative Justice in Custodial Settings.

Eileen Ullrich

Eileen is a Masters student of International Criminology, University of Hamburg. She visited the Centre, From June to September 2010, in order to do research for her Master’s thesis on “Securitizing Cape Town: social impact of the security concepts in the World Cup’s South Africa“.
