Tom Herbstein

Tom Herbstein joined the Centre of Criminology in 2008 after managing a sustainability retrofit programme within the UCT Faculty of Law exploring ways to decrease the use of energy, water and production of waste. Since then, he has been involved in a number of environmental projects, with the Centre, ranging from community-based solid waste management through to sustainable low-cost housing for poor communities across South Africa. He has also been involved in developing models for increasing sustainability within schools, businesses and buildings, working with a wide range of stakeholders in the process. More recently he has co-ordinated the Centre's 'fulcrum governance programme', with a personal emphasis on the activities of the insurance industry and local government, and their response to climate change.

He has a B.Sc. in Oceanography & Climatology and a Masters in Environmental Law, both completed at UCT. He is also currently completing a PhD at the Centre.
