Julie Berg

Julie Berg is a senior lecturer in the Public Law Department at the University of Cape Town and is associated with the NRF African Security and Justice Programme at the Centre of Criminology. Julie qualified with a Master of Social Science in Criminology at the University of Cape Town and is currently undertaking a PhD on the regulation of polycentric security governance in South African improvement districts.

Julie teaches the following criminology courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students in both the Law and Humanities Faculties:

Research interests

Julie's research interests lie primarily in the functioning; regulation and accountability of non-state security governance – particularly the private security industry and urban improvement districts. She is also interested in public-private partnerships between institutions and agencies involved in security and policing, such as the development of these partnerships; how they are regulated; and the convergence of state and private techniques of security provision.

Postgraduate supervision

Honours and LLM / MPhil (criminology and criminal justice) supervision in most areas of criminology, but primarily private security and plural policing; partnership policing; community and market involvement in security; police accountability and regulation; private prisons; crime trends and statistics.
