HONORARY RESEARCH ASSOCIATES, CENTRE OF CRIMINOLOGY, LAW FACULTY, UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

Dr. Deon Nel, appointed in January 2012, is the most recently appointed Honorary Research Associate, attached to the Centre of Criminology, Law Faculty, UCT. Deon is the author of over 20 scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals and author of a large number of popular articles and book chapters. He heads up the World Wildlife Fund's Biodiversity Unit. The Centre has recently collaborated with him on a joint CSIR-UCT-Santam research project entitled: Business risk & resilience in a changing world: The Insurance Collaboration. The project aims to understand the role of insurance in promoting more resilient landscapes.

Prof. Jan Froestad is an Associate Professor, Institute of Administration and Organization Theory , University of Bergen, Norway. He was appointed as an Honorary Research Associate, University of Cape Town in July 2011. His research interests are in the governance of security and conflict management. This research interest led to a collaboration, from 2003 onwards, with Professor Clifford Shearing of the Centre of Criminology, in several research projects on the governance of security and policing, exploring, among other things, the ‘Zwelethemba’ model of conflict management and community development. Jan is at present involved with Environmental Security Research in collaboration with researchers at the Centre.

Cormac Cullinan, a director of EnAct International is an honorary research associate attached to the Centre of Criminology, Law Faculty, University of Cape Town. Cormac is an author, and practising environmental attorney and governance expert who has worked on environmental governance issues in more than 20 countries. He is best know internationally for pioneering the emerging field of “Earth Jurisprudence” inspired by the work of Thomas Berry. His groundbreaking book Wild Law A Manifesto for Earth Justice (Siberink 2002 and Green Books 2009) has played a significant role in informing and inspiring a growing international movement and led to his inclusion in the book Planet Savers. 301 Extraordinary Environmentalists (2008) which profiles environmentalists through the ages for Buddha to Al Gore.

Dr. Liora Lazarus, lecturer at the Law Faculty of Oxford University and fellow of St. Anne's College, Oxford, is a research associate of the Law Faculty, University of Cape Town, appointed in March 2010. Her research interests are comparative human rights, security and human rights, comparative penal theory and comparative criminal justice. A recent publication, co-edited with Benjamin Goold, is Security and Human Rights (Hart Publishing, 2007).
